METALS

ALUMINUM

The name aluminum is derived from the ancient name for alum (potassium aluminum sulphate), which was alumen (Latin, meaning bitter salt). Aluminum was the original name given to the element by Humphry Davy but others called it aluminum and that became the accepted name in Europe. However, in the USA the preferred name was aluminum and when the American Chemical Society debated on the issue, in 1925, it decided to stick with aluminum. Aluminum is a soft and lightweight metal. It has a dull silvery appearance, because of a thin layer of oxidation that forms quickly when it is exposed to air. Aluminum is nontoxic (as the metal) nonmagnetic and non-sparking. Applications Aluminum is used in many industries to make millions of different products and is very important to the world economy. Structural components made from aluminum are vital to the aerospace industry and very important in other areas of transportation and building in which light weight, durability, and strength are needed.

COPPER

COPPER

Applications Most copper is used for electrical equipment (60%); construction, such as roofing and plumbing (20%); industrial machinery, such as heat exchangers (15%) and alloys (5%). The main long established copper alloys are bronze, brass (a copper-zinc alloy), copper-tin-zinc, which was strong enough to make guns and cannons, and was known as gun metal, copper and nickel, known as cupronickel, which was the preferred metal for low-denomination coins. Copper is ideal for electrical wiring because it is easily worked, can be drawn into fine wire and has a high electrical conductivity.

SHREDDED SCRAP

SHREDDED SCRAP

Shredded scrap is a large part of the recycling industry and can be utilized in multiple circumstances. The classification of shredded scrap is outlined to give a better understanding of what goes into this category. The shredded scrap grade consists of homogeneous iron and steel scrap, which is magnetically separated, originating from automobiles, including but not limited to unprepared no. 1 and no. 2 steel, miscellaneous baling, and sheet scrap. For shredded scrap, the average density ranges from fifty (50) pounds per cubic foot, to seventy (70) pounds per cubic foot, as specified by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries

AIR COMPRESSOR SCRAP

Air Compressor scrap is any unserviceable air conditioning or refrigeration compressor collected for the purpose of sale as scrap metal. The compressors are typically stored separately from other scrap metal for a number of reasons. The first is the potential presence of contaminants such as oil and residual refrigerant gas in the compressor housings. The second is the fact that the compressors are sealed units containing several types of metals requiring a separate billing system to that applied to single metal scrap material.
